Many of the laws or commandments (not talking about the Ten Commandments, but the other commandments) required stoning fellow Israelites for not following. There's one thing to have laws; there's another thing to have laws and explain why they are necessary; and there's still another thing to have laws and say you will die if you don't follow them. I'm not talking about capital punishment for murder. There's capital punishment for all sorts of behaviors that would have even the most pious Christian today killed.

And in 1000 years, the electric chair and the gas chamber will probably be considered extremely barbaric. Should the ancient Israelites not have had a death penalty? And if they should have, what the heck else are they supposed to use 4000 years ago?

Thugpreacha, you might want to take the time to read "The Bible Unearthed". You'll find the OT - at least through Kings - is pretty much all made up.

And if all those evil acts attributed to the Israelites (under orders from YHWH) are fiction, well, it just might be that YHWH is too.

Magus55,

We don't have to wait 1000 years. I'd wager that death by the gas chamber, electric chair, and/or lethal injection are considered barbaric today by the majority of rational people. (Even when used for punishment of the worst of all crimes.)

Death by stoning for working on the Sabbath (just one utterly ridiculous biblical example) is beyond barbaric . . .

Here is an example that even Magus can appreciate.

Consider the adulteres woman.
She was going to be stoned to death as per Yahweh's law.
Jesus asked "let he who is without sin throw the first stone"

Compare this with Yahweh and the Amalekites.

Thug ?

Oh Thug ?

Where did he run off to?

Well, the OT god was so reprehensible that two separate groups of 100 CE believers (gnostics and Marcionites) believed that he was not THE God and that he was evil. So, Magus, there goes your argument for changed thinking.

So why are we impressed with a bunch of heretics?

I agree totally. And I can sympathise with Pharaoh’s slight over reaction to God causing millions of frogs to invade his country. I can't imagine how distasteful it must have been for him, having the streets of his city overrun with their slimy presence. I coudn't have stuck it like he did. It’s as much as I can do to watch their detestable president on the news.

I recall seeing a drama documentary once where a bloke was getting stoned for saying how much he had enjoyed eating a haddock. Crazy.

Heresy exists only in the mind of the believer. Maybe you should think about why they considered the deity of the old testament to be evil, they had damned good reasons. A six year old child can shoot holes through the 'morality' of your god.

I'd love to live in the world where "Life of Brian" was considered a drama documentary.
