History as science: Cliodynamics
Here is an interesting talk by Peter Turchin. He gives some views on how History can be made more scientific. Note his remarks about the Axial Age and social integration as the basis for states: these provide an interesting bridge between work by Karen Armstrong (A Short History of Myth, The Great Transformation) and Rodney Stark (The Rise of Christianity).
This talk was part of Beyond Belief 2008: Candles in the Dark. Gerard Stafleu |

For those interested in the integration of scientific principals with the art of history, Turchin has a web site dedicated to "cliodynamics" here:
http://www.eeb.uconn.edu/people/turchin/Clio.htm I'll be posting my comments after reading it. DCH Quote:
