No problem - but it gets weirder. This actually grew out of a talk I'm giving at a local church on the the gospels from a purely historical perspective. So it involves an atheist giving talks in church about the gospels... now how did I get into that!

I found it interesting to see who was quoting who about authorship, and how far apart they lived etc.

I added some of the suggestions in, got a better map and moved the labels around.
More suggestions again

1) I think it was better to not worry about putting the labels in the middle of the map, the middle is just the sea anyway.

2) Definitely need higher compression, that images is over a meg.

3) The green arrow are hard to see, you need red or black.

4) Defiantly still need to Oregin and Clement of Alexandria, two major figures, both from Alexandria Egypt.

5) That map is also a little busy, how about this suggestion:

This one may not be usable due to size, but its interesting to keep in mind:

Still, its a great project!

I just like that map because its plain and it gives you more relevant information since its set around the time that we are talking about.

You might want to try washing out the colors a little, to make your labels stand out more. IN fact I'll try this myself and post the image back.

Here, I made these adjustments, you can see if you like them.

http://www.rationalrevolution.net/temp/romemap.png

I made the color for Rome less dark, and I moved the legend out of the way a bit, but perhaps you can move it to a better spot.

I left the white at the bottom as the place where you can put the timeline and any comments, etc.

In fact, it may be good to move the legend to the bottom, just by recreating it. There are options.

What you have already looks good too though.

Oh, and I saved it into png format, because if you work with jpg the image degrades each time you save it.

Oh, and I had an idea for how you can show the period that their letters come from (if you have that info), you can fill in the color of the box with red or green or something. So, for example, if they lived from 60-135, but their letters come from 100-135, then you can fill that portion of the label in a different color.

This may be too messy I dunno, just a thought. The other problem is that we don't have solid dates for these things anyway.

What about having a key listing the people and just having numbers representing them on the map? It might be a little clearer without the lines.

I think this is a good idea. If you start at 1 for the earliest and then go up, then the numbers also give an idea of sequence when looking at the map.

Not sure myself, I'm not sure it conveys it quite as well. However you decide based on this quick mock up (which also uses the updated map - thanks!).

I like it. You could crop off the top part of the image now since it doesn't have any relevant info at this point.
