Origin of "the Fish"
I'm sure you're all familiar with the decal on the back of many cars with "Jesus Saves" or some sort of phrase on it. I am looking for information on the origin or adoption of this symbol into the Christian faith. I somehow suspect that the symbol stems from pagan or astrological influences, however I can't be sure. For some reason, Pisces comes to mind. I wanted to introduce the adoption of this symbol as another example or religious borrowing.

The official story is that it is because "ichthys", the Greek word for "fish", is an abbreviation for a religious phrase (Iesous CHristos something somehting something).
Thoguh there's quite a lot to be said for the vagina theories too. |

I'd always heard it was a symbol used by christians to recognize other christians on the sly, to avoid persecution or some such. It was derived from the similarity between Jesus Christ in Greek, and fish in Greek.
It was like a secret handshake or something. Others will undoubtedly give more specific information. Ed |

Take the first letter of each word in the sentence, and you get ΙΧΘΥΣ or ιχθυς in lowercase, which means "fish". Cute, isn't it? |

Nermal is correct. During Roman days, Christians were persecuted so instead of wearing a cross, they created a secret symbol to distinguish themselves without drawing attention.
