Are There Jewish Inerrantists?
Fundamentalist Xians base a number of illogical claims on the twin notions of literalism and inerrancy. To them the world was really created in October 4004 BCE, there is a single story of creation occurring in the strict sequence set down, evolution is false, and Noah packed 180,000 animals on a boat - to name a few notions.
However, these are OT stories. I am unaware of any (relatively) modern Jewish sect that accepts the OT stories as literal. I also wonder if there is a true Jewish inerrancy belief in these non-doctrinal stories. To me, it's the height of irony for Baptists, for example, to be literalists and inerrantists for OT stories, if Jewish scholars abandoned these ideas centuries ago (if they ever held them at all). As Jewish writers were the original authors of the stories and keepers of the faith, shouldn't Xians defer to Jews at least on this area of the OT (if not doctrine that Yeshua replaced)? Does anyone know of a post-renaissance sect of Judiasm that espouses literalism and inerrancy for the entire OT - including these stories? How can Xians honestly claim the right to "out interpret" Jewish scholars? |

Conservative Judaism might be one of those; although I don't know their official positions on such matters, it's demonstrable that some of them hold to inerrantist-like positions like a 6000 year old universe. Heathen Dawn was one, I believe, and you can try PM'ing him to post in this topic.
