Default Modus operandi of conservative Christian archaeologists

A Bible in one hand, and a shovel in the other.

I must confess that I stole that gem from yalla, who said something similar.

Bible and spade is the usual combo. The arch-example is W.F. Albright (and his pupils, archaeologists George Ernest Wright, Nelson Gluck, Cyrus Gordon, and E.A. Speiser). Archaeology of Israel is much less bible and spade these days. It's much more an organ of Zionist propaganda. There are notable exceptions, but the tendentiousness of a lot of Israeli archaeology is transparent, when we hear of the discovery of David's this or Solomon's that, which quietly fade away.

It's an issue with all archeology. King Arthur's town has been 'found' a half dozen times and the 'lost' city of Atlantis was supposedly discovered (again) just last month..

St Peter is up to 27 'fingers' distributed in various cathedrals and shrines.

So, you're saying that Peter has given the church the "finger"? Rockin'!

"Bible and Spade" seems to be the name of the journal of the Associates for Biblical Research.

That journal often features the work of Eilat Mazar, who has often said that she works with a Bible in one hand and the tools of archaeology in the other.

There are also multiple head of John the Baptist, not to mention enough pieces of the holy prepuce to make a sail for the ark built with pieces of the cross.

I would go so far to say that in the case of the 19th century Papal archaeologist Giovanni de Rossi we could improve on yallas comment. But first an introduction from Graydon Snyder's Ante Pacem:
"The real founders of the science of early Christian archaeology
came in the 19th century: Giuseppe Marchi (1795 - 1860) and
Giovanni de Rossi (1822 - 1894) .... it was de Rossi who published
the first great mass of data.... Between 1857 and 1861 he published
the first volume of Inscriptiones christianae urbis Romae.

Pope Pius IX moved beyond collecting by appointing in 1852 a commission
(Commissione de archaelogia sacra) that would be responsible for
all early Christian remains."

Now, back to Giovanni de Rossi and yalla's comment.

I do not think Giovanni de Rossi carried a Bible in one hand, and a shovel in the other.

The Pope carried the bible, and blessed Giovanni de Rossi with the other.

I think Giovanni de Rossi carried a shovel in one hand and a stone mason's chizel in the other.

Giovanni de Rossi created some well respected forged inscriptions. Oded may have studied Giovanni de Rossi .
