Here's a description of the show that can be bought as DVD set. It's kinda general and it will not give you much insight into the details. I've missed parts due to the "cardiovascular collapse which was the Superbowl" so I only remember bits and pieces. The important thing is that they discussed not only the Old Testament (as Friedman does in his "Who Wrote the Bible") but the New Testament and the Gnostic gospels alike (stressing the gospel of Thomas). Part of the show was dedicated to Dead Sea Scrolls. I should be able to watch this again in next couple of days (TiVo rocks) so I'll try to post more details.

If it's general reading, then dig in. If you want to use it as a quick reference, you might want to make some sort of notes or highlights (if you do this in your books) so that you can recall where you read a statement at...

1). The hypothesis basically states that the first five books of the Old Testament were compiled and edited together over many centuries from a variety of sources, both written and oral.

2.) According to Friedman, J was composed sometime between 922 - 722 BCE, during the divided kingdoms of Judah and Israel.

3.) It doesn't appear so. I HIGHLY recommend reading the introduction to "The Bible With It's Sources Revealed" as it seems to me that Friedman is throwing down the gauntlet to DH critics and daring them to prove that the Hypothesis holds no water. It's great stuff! He concludes his brief introduction thus:

Quote:
I have assembled evidence in other books and articles to show the flaws in recent attacks on the Documentary Hypothesis from the radical and traditional ends of the spectrum. The present book is more concerned with the positive presentation of the evidence on which the hypothesis stands. For those who wish to see the evidence against those recent attacks, see the appendix in "The Hidden Book in the Bible (pp. 350-378); and my articles "Solomon and the Great Histories," in Jerusalem in Bbile and Archeaology--The First Temple Period, ed. Ann Killebrew and Andrew Vaughn (Atlanta: Society of Biblical Literatrue, 2002); "An Essay on Method," in Le-David Maskil, ed. Richard Elliott Friedman and WIlliam Henry Propp (Biblical and Judaic Studies from the University of California, San Diego; Winona Lake, IN: Eisenbrauns, 2003); "Some Recent Non-arguments Concerning the Documentary Hypothesis," in Texts, Temples, and Traditions: A Tribute to Menahem Haran, ed. Michael Fox et al. (Winona Lake, IN: Eisenbrauns, 1996), pp. 87-101; and "Late for a Very Important Date," Bible Review 9:6 (1996): 12-16. [p. 6]
Hope this helps.

You mean, the Bible?
Nah. It's way too boring. First Chronicles is like reading a phone book.
