Default How history is distorted in the name of faith

Here is another guy who blame atheists and atheism for everything bad in history.
An example: “Multitudes of Christians have faithfully helped the downtrodden behind the scenes in their respective communities, while some have been used publicly by the Lord to positively impact in greater ways. For example, William Wilberforce, who fought vehemently against slavery in the 18th century” The obvious question is “he fought with whom?” With atheists? They were responsible for slavery?
And another one: “Conversely, where atheism rules a nation and God is disallowed, injustice and human atrocities occur.” Of course, the guy forgets to explain how Inquisition and suicide bombers are (were) fighting for a good cause... Who cares about history? Who cares about the truth?

How can you argue with someone like this:

Quote:
The author is a Baptist Preacher and Bible Teacher. He helps those grieving the loss of a pet to understand the Biblical evidence that proves they live on. His most popular book, "Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates" delivers hope and comfort to the reader in a very gentle, yet convincing way.
But I'm afraid this is not concerned with the eras of history that this forum covers. Would you like to pick another forum where I can move it?

Well, "General Religious Discussions " would be fine. If you have any other suggestion, just move it where you think it's ok.

Very simple answer: he fought against people who supported slavery.

Most of whom were ... Christians, just like he was.

The problem here is that the guy who wrote this crap insinuates the idea that only Christians fought against slavery. When the author states in the title "Atheism at its worst" and then wrties in the article how Christians fought against slavery, the conclusion is one and simple: atheists are the bad guys who enforced the slavery. That is, euphemistically speaking, hypocrisy at its worst.

Interesting that you chose to leave out the point concerning the comment made by the atheist: Christians have no social value; they do not positively contribute to society.

The author was simply giving examples of the Christians impact for good in society. Your conclusion is totally illogical. Perhaps you did not read the article.

Oh, I've read it all, even that last part: "The author is a Baptist Preacher and Bible Teacher. He helps those grieving the loss of a pet to understand the Biblical evidence that proves they live on." No wonder that the atheist came up with this idea...
Thing is that both the Old and the New Testaments recognize and accept the institution of slavery as allowable and the New Testament admonishes slaves to obey their masters (1 Peter 2:18; Ephesians 6:5-8; Titus 2:9-10; Colossians 3:22-25; 1 Timothy 6:1).
I don't say that there are no Christians with impact for good in society. There are many of them. But the author of that article is definitely not one of them.

Well, at least not with his book.

Interesting that you choose to focus on this alleged comment from an atheist and fail to mention that the preacher didn't respond to a comment to him as such. Immediately preceding the quote he says: "Not too many years ago, I listened to a self-professed atheist on television say..". He is using a vague anonymous quote to launch an attack on atheists. Not because someone has just attacked him, oh no, he's reaching back into the past to drum up an affront to him and his beliefs. I'm not even convinced he actually did hear an atheist say that. Perhaps you didn't read the article.
