Default Jesus home town, Nazareth, or Capernaum?

Well? Provide your best argument for your selection.

Alright-- I don't think Jesus existed but since I have no reason to believe otherwise I'm saying he grew up in Nazareth. I mean, since the best proof of his existence is the Bible - if we are assuming he existed why not say he grew up where the Bible says he did.

Only two choices? Why not, "He never existed"?

It's like asking, "What is Superman's favorite ice cream flavor: chocolate or strawberry?"

The NT claims he came from Nazareth, it seems.

According to Luke, he was brought up in Nazareth
Luke 4:16 "He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up,..."

According to Matthew, he only settled in Capernaum after he had set out on his mission:

Matt 4:13 "and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali"

Mark is not quite so clear, but this is pretty early in his gospel.
Mark 1:9 "At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan"

John (Philip is talking about Jesus):
John 1:46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked.

I avoided verses that go like "Jesus of Nazareth" since some will have it that this means Jesus the Nazarene (or Nazorene), indicating a group of people. Of course, he could also have been a Nazorene, but that's another matter.

Cheers!

Hey spamandham,

I dont see any option for Jesus' home town being ROME (the city of the ancient tradition of the Pontifex Maximus). I dont think Jesus was born in either Nazareth or Capernaum.

Best wishes,

Pete

And even if he wasn't born in Rome, he was probaly forced to live there.

The Jesus of Luke was raised in Jerusalem and went to heaven in the end and the Jesus of Matthew grew up in Capurnaum and never went to heaven but was send on the great commision instead = back to Galilea he goes from where it is said: can anything good come from Nazareth (except as Nazorene).

That depends on what stage of his life we are considering.
Taking me as an example
1. I was born in one town and lived there until I was four
2. Family moved to another town where I lived until I was 22
3. Since then I have lived in three other towns
Where am I from?
I am from all on them yet am currently at only one.

For what its worth during his ministry Jesus was of Capernaum. Nazereth was where he grew up.

I am also aware that other cultures may express it differently to how we might.

....and so the punchline.

If Jesus was from Capernaum during the important part of his life, why is he known as "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" on the cross?

Because he went to heaven. He was from Capurnaum only in Matthew and that Jesus went to hell . . . .which is the continuum of purgation until death.

There is nothing wrong with Capurnaum in Galilea as a place to 'run the race' for 40 months but not to 'race' there for 40 years and die nonetheless (this difference is found in Rev. 14 between the first and second beast).

Just compare "Go and carry the news to my brothers that they are to go to Galilee, where they will see me" (Mat.28:10) with "then he led them to a town near Bethany and with his hands upraised he blessed them. As he blessed, he left them, and was taken up to heaven" (Lk.24:51).

Obviously, the Jesus of Matthew was "the final imposter who will be much worse than the first" that the Chief priest cautioned Pilate (our faculty of reason) about in Matthew 27:64.
