Obviously this is an issue which will never be resolved. My take is simply that folktales all over the world are neat stories told to keep the kids quiet and hopefully encourage them to doze off. Adam and Eve seem to be about as instructive to me as Coyote climbing a chain of arrows to reach the moon.

The knowledge in the fruit was a time release formula, so several minutes passed before Eve became aware. There was plenty of time for Adam to take a bite beforehand.
