Ah, the great buffet for beliefs!
I funny teacher of mine was speaking to a large assembly and he was talking about how Christians pick and choose their beliefs.
He set up a complex metaphor of the buffet line as if someone were eating lunch at a Chinese restaurant, or a Shoneys for that matter. He said the line is stocked with beliefs instead of food and Christians, when evaluating their faith, their inventory of beliefs, they pick and choose what they want to accept and what they don't want to accept. Let's see, an eye-for-an-eye view of justice, oh wow, that sounds good. I'll put that on my tray. Uh...no premarital sex. I don't think I care for that today. Remember and keep the Sabbath holy...no, I don't care for that. Honor your mother and father...well they are paying my student loans so that is acceptable but this thing about covet thy neighbor's possessions doesn't look good today. I'll leave that one behind. Now, let's see, the Golden Rule. Well it sounds good if it applies to me, but not when I have to extend this toward others, that is when the cheese has turned! The point was, the Bible is useless as being a document of faith as are organized Christian religious sacraments and dogmas. When he delivered this talk to a very large group of religious and pious individuals, I laughed my butt off! (only one laughing). Later he said he teaches philosophy and many tell him that philosophy makes one lose their religion. He said actually, more people lose their religion because of their sex lives than do studying philosophy (another one that busted me out!:notworthy )! |
