Default When were the gospels written?

Possibly written? I'd say any time between the late first and middle third century is possible. I also think there are some serious plausibility problems with the later part of that range, though.

From my reading of the evidence -- all the evidence, not just a few selected data -- I think they probably reached their present form, or something close to it, sometime in the middle of the second century. I also think that what we now have is the result of an evolution that likely began in the late first century.

Evidence for the traditional dating (i.e. Mark ca 70 CE, John in the 90s, and Matthew and Luke somewhere in between) is, I would say, not just indecisive but practically nonexistent.
