Very simple. Bishop Ussher worked backwards on the geneologies given in the Bible. Oh, and Columbo - God didn't write it. Imaginary deities can't write things...

Bishop Ussher's argument as described in the cited extract is about how (having determined from genealogical studies that the world began in 4004 BC) he calculated that creation began on the 23 October of that year according to the Julian calendar.

The basic argument is that (since at exactly 365 1/4 days the Julian year differs slightly from the seasonal year) in c 4000 BC the autumn equinox would be occuring around the 21st of October. in that year the first Sunday after that date is the 23rd of October hence that is the first day of creation week.
