As I drove to work this cold MN morning, the sun shined with the brightest, most impressive sun dogs I have ever seen. For those who don't know, sun dogs appear when there are tiny ice crystals in the air. They are caused by refraction, sometimes ranging from a yellow/orange glimmer, to full-spectrum rainbows, appearing as vertical arcs to either side of the sun. Today's were full, bright rainbows. Looking at them, a thought hit me.

God sent Noah the rainbow after the flood as a sign that he would never destroy mankind for their sins again. God is all knowing, and must have known that the gay community would take the rainbow as their symbol. If god used a gay symbol to send a message of peace, clearly god thinks gay, is a-ok!

It's to do with the basic reason homosexuality in males (and therefore, generalised homosexuality) has always been feared and hated. It's because of ancient gender inequalities and male domination in the societies that gave rise to our post-christian sense of morals. In Judaism and early Christianity (and therefore Islam) women were, and still are, non-humans, men's property, and somewhere between the worth of a cow and a house. In the sex-act, the man is already debasing himself by being with her. That's why cleansing rituals and quarantine times were required before the couple/male could perform his religious duties. He is "unclean" because he has been with her.

But, even though this is dirty, to lower one's self to the position of a woman (ie- the be the "receiver" of the phallus instead of the dominant active giver) was the ultimate sin, lowering YHWH/Allah's greatest creation (Men) to the position of something that is non-human. And thus, fear of receiving anal sex and persecution is born, overflowing into other taboos like "no oral sex" (again, lowering oneself to a position of female prostitues) and "nothing but the missionary" (just to make sure we get the message). The Islamic laws forbidding female homosexuality were basically control laws to make sure the man still had sexual posession of his harem... I mean multiple wives. I'm not sure if there ever was any laws in Judaeo-Christian dogma that forbade female relationships though. I'd have to look it up.

So yeah. Again, homophobia is just another symptom of a society that is still disgustingly inequal and (at least in Western culture) blind to the fact thanks to the anti-feminist backlash from the Conservative wings (who are the most homophobic of all... closet cases).
