Hey, SuperVegito, welcome to the IIDBs, and please do hang around, always on the lookout for hearing from "other" perspectives on matters of faith, morals, and religion.

“We placed firmly embedded mountains on the earth, so that it would not move under them”.
Isostasy; “general equilibrium in the earth's crust maintained by a yielding flow of rock material beneath the surface under gravitative stress”. Isostasy sounds like two skins (or sheets), one passing beneath another. The top skin wrinkles. This is very unlike pegs, but if you want to make an issue of it, you could creatively say that it is like pegs, but to me it isn’t. The mountains are a by-product of the geologic forces pressing tectonic plates together, a range of mountains may form. This does not equate to: “We placed firmly embedded mountains on the earth”. Rather what has happened is mountains simply form because of geological forces, and when two opposing forces meet, there will be either earth quakes or mountains formed, (over geological time). Although the mountain range may seem fairly static, it is in fact very dynamic, (albeit over geological time scales). Of course tectonic plates move a lot, and at one stage in the history of the earth, these plates formed one super-continent. You might also say that “We placed bends in rivers, so that alluvial plains might form”. But no we didn’t. Bends in rivers occur because rivers must flow downhill under gravity, following the contours. Later, erosion and deposition may lead to alluvial plains. I know that Muslims love the Qur’an, but it seems to me that the words in that book are misinterpreted by some people. To say that the words prove something about a deity, one must eliminate other possibilities. The words may be right, but it may be for the wrong reason. They may be wrong. Here is an interpretation of the passage, which could be attributed to a human being, rather than a deity:- Mountains don’t seem to move, and make good guide posts when travelling, unlike sand dunes, which are constantly shifting. If the traveller uses sand dunes for guidance, then that traveller could easily get lost - it seems as if the whole landscape (earth) is shifting. Use a mountain to help guide your journey, because it seems pegged to the ground like a tent is, so that it does not move away. |
