Did the World's First Church Resemble a Circus Tent More than a European Cathedral?
As I have discussed my work on 'rediscovering' the original Church of St. Mark in Alexandria at the discussion group, I want to officially throw in the towel and acknowledge that the literary evidence suggests there is nothing to find before the end of the third century. I have been studying Clement of Alexandria's writing closely and come to the conclusion that we will find no physical remains of a second or even third century Church in the waters of the Mediterranean on the eastern shores of Alexandria. All that was built there likely doesn't date much earlier than the fourth century.
Here are my conclusions for those who are interested: http://stephanhuller.blogspot.com/20...lement-of.html |

We are currently running with the theory that before there were Christian churches, there were earlier Christian "church-houses", and that even earlier, before there were "church houses", there were "house-churches", such as the single and lone exemplar known as the "Duros-Europos House-Church", which is presently on tour with the Yale Divinity Department.
The idea that before there were "Christian House-Churches" there were "Christian Tent Churches" sounds like a very exciting new idea, since it immediately explains why such structures are not available as "evidence" to the archaeologists. Nevertheless .... Quote:

That's the standard model developed from Roman/Antiochene sources (= the Acts of the Apostles). I am interested in developing the traditional Alexandrian narrative.
