In another thread on this forum someone mentioned that the word "god" in Genesis 1:26 is in fact "gods" in the ancient Hebrew. However I cannot find it again, can anyone verify this please, or have I misunderstood?

"Elohim" is plural in form, everywhere and not just in your quote. It could be intended as a plural of majesty, like in "We, the King", or it might be a leftover from early polytheistic days. You'll surely ge better answers, but I couldn't resist.

True, Anders. Similarly even that plural breaks down to two related aspects -- the plurality of majesty and power and glory and attributes .. and the plurality of speaking with the angelic heavenly host, or the 'heavenly court'. The problem with the second is that angels are not direct "creators", to make man. However both views have been expressed in rabbinics and scholarly circles.
