Default Move over Jesus, screw Darwin, I wanna Tyana fish!

In this thread about the Ichthus symbol, Biff the unclean writes:

"Odd also, that this symbol was used by the followers of Apollonius of Tyana only to them it was the sign of the fish-in those days a single fish and not the pair it became in the middle ages-from the Zodiac. It meant "rebirth" and though these people used it as a sign of their religion it was the commonly used sign of Pisces outside of their religion."

Were can I find art or literary references to the use of the fish in the cult of Apollonius of Tyana? References to the Pisces/Fish symbol in other contexts would also be desirable.

best,
Peter Kirby

If the fish symbol "was the commonly used sign of Pisces outside of their religion" it must have been the familiar astrological symbol.

Have you tried http://www.apollonius.net/ ? I can't get into it - the download time is too long, but it looks like it might have what you want.

Google searching that site turns up this, but I can't find what the author is talking about.

Google cache
"When I first started to conceive of this book and make my plans to travel to Tyana, and after I returned to Texas and began to actually write the book, I was thinking primarily in terms of the series of articles by Dr. Bernard that we found on the World Wide Web. The idea that there might have been coincidental equations between Damis and Saint Thomas, for example, didn't even occur to me. The idea of a "mystery" behind the Christian fish symbol was not a part of the intended outline. These are correlative hypotheses that were born from the basic scheme of the planned research that was based upon the premises of Dr. Bernard."

Please let me know if you turn up any more references.

Peter Kirby

The Pisces symbol from astrology has not to do with the symbol of Christianity or Apollonius of Tyana. The fish symbol taken by the Christians has several roots. One is from Dagon from Mesopotamia and another is from the Roman Goddess Cybele. The temple of the Roman Goddess Cybele - The Mother Goddess - was placed in Rom and was exchanged to the catholic Vatican. A third root is taken from the female symbol and is called 'Vesica Piscis'.

So the Pope wears that funny hat in order to look like a fish?

That's a very interesting collection of pictures.
