Default The Da Vinci Code *spoiler*

This thread contains a spoiler--the underlying theme of The Da Vinci Code. Do not read on if you do not wish to know. Thanks.

For those of you who have read it or have heard enough about it to know its underlying theme---that Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ were lovers--what do you think?

I guess this would be aimed at Christians who have read this book. But anyone who can answer--how come there are no references to Magdalene in even the Acts of the Apostles? If she was such a huge influence, why isn't there anything SMALL about her even in the Catholic Canon? --Or am i saying that out of ignorance and uttering false notions?

Are there atleast "small"/"hidden" references to Magdalene in the "official" New Testament?

I have no reason to believe that they were. The main motivation for believing this was so is to create an alternative line of authority in their descendents.

I have no idea how important she was to the early Church. She isn't mentioned after she finds the empty tomb, but the history of Christianity in the 1st Century in the NT is quite sparse.

Some think she is the woman who washes Jesus' feet with her tears since she appears in Luke immediately after that scene, but I don't believe this claim.

There might be hidden references to her, but they are hidden to me .

PS - I haven't read the book.

i'm not convinced there was a jesus christ to start with. To me he's an imaginairy figure made up to function as poster boy for a "inteligent designed" religion .

Well, there's the Gospel of Mary (and, IIRC, she seems to be a favorite of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas).

In the canonical gospels, some have suggested that she was behaving like a "wife" in going to anoint his body in the tomb.

I would very much prefer the theory as portaryed in Da Vinci code than that of the bible.

Go figure..............

Da Vinci code is fiction based on that book.

The book is fiction. Why do people think it's a fact?

I can't figure out why christians are so much offended by the idea that jesus had a girlfriend OR wife.

Why can't christians see the human nature OR human side of Jesus ?

Why not see him as just another guy with few original thoughts, and the human strengths and weaknesses ?

In Hinduism, the gods are portrayed very much human with all the human strengths and weaknesses. So are the greek gods.

If christians accept that jesus was a normal, naturally born Homo sapien, all the problems end.

In the minds of quite a few Christians, Jesus was supposed to be "perfect". Since sexuality and normal human relationships tend to be messy, not to mention the usual taboos of a male dominated culture, the notion of Jesus doing anything human would probably be seen as outright offensive.

Just some armchair psychology.

I rather like the idea, but then I was bought up in a church that didn't think that Jesus was God, just exceptionally enlightened.

If there was a historic Jesus, or a basis for a historic Jesus, in all likelihood he was married and perhaps MM was his wife, since she is in the stories surrounding him and a wife would be near her husband.

Since the story of Jesus has a black hole spanding from his birth untill the final year, or so, of his life much are left out (can't give details, I'm no bibel expert). He could have had a mistress for sure. Wasn't Magdalena described as a prostitute of some sort? Anyway I've read the book. As fiction it stunk about half way in, and as fact it stole from "Holy blood, holy grail" (even the name of that bok gives it away pretty much, Sangue Real - blood of kings, not San Greal - Holy Grail (pardon my spelling))from what I've heard (I'm about to read that - some day), but thought it had some good points. The one about Magdalena isn't new or far-fetched at all. I'm astouned that she isn't declared Jesus girlfriend in the christian sociaty (but than again I'm not).
