Understanding the two covenants
Reading the new article at KIOSH by Chris Sandoval "Jeremiah's New Covenant vs Christianity", he says:
"The New Testament authors frequently manufactured prophecies about Jesus by twisting Old testament passages out of context to make them say things the original authors never intended. The Old Testament prophets had nothing to say about Jesus, who lived many centuries after their time; they only spoke about the concerns of their own times, as we read in treatises by Jim Lippard on the Secular Web[1], and American patriot and deist Thomas Paine[2]. Here we examine one spectacular but commonly overlooked example of misquoted prophesy -- Jeremiah's prophecy of the New Covenant." Ok, most of the article I agree with as relating to the story of the covenants, but why isn't the simple answer in the acts of circumcision and law? The first covenant was "the sign in the flesh", circumcision, and this established an identity in loyalty for those in Abraham's House name. Some 450 years later(?) the prophets decided circumcision was not enough to persuade loyalty so Moses created laws for the 12 tribes and called it a new covenant - the second covenant, which did not make void the first, but established a "better covenant" with ordinances-laws, for the people of Israel. Why would this ideology not be the tie-in of Jeremiah when he spoke of a new covenant for Judah and for Israel? The Gentiles - uncircumised and without having any laws given to them, were of course excluded in Old and New Testaments. So, Peter and Paul attempted to impose Gentiles as a new people, acceptable to God, and a replacement theology. But in fact, they were not. For both "circumcision and observance of law[keeping the law], was always required for Jews and any Gentiles who wanted to convert to Judaism. One law for both Jew and Gentile convert. In the story, was there ever any other religion taught that one should convert to? ( Considering that "the way, truth and life" of Jesus was Judaism. And why he said, "salvation is of the Jews". ) Insights always welcome. |
