It's not the all-or-nothing book that fundamentalists (atheist and Christian) say that we must either accept wholesale or burn.
No, no, of course not! "God-breathed," for sure, but sometimes God suffers from halitosis. We more "enlightened" Christians need to ignore the unpleasantries and approach the Bible as a buffet table. We pick and choose which parts we want to embrace and which we wish to ignore. Hey, afterall, God can have a bad day, too!

Where's the one about a woman touching a man's parts and having her hand cut off?

If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives
The underlying reason why women "save themselves for marriage". They are property. Their virginity is either the property of the father (thus the fifty shekels) or the property of the husband. Just like using someone else's new toothbrush before they get to use it, if you use it then you have to buy it.

Probably why good Christian girls are called "dirty toothbrushes" if they have sex before marriage. Because they're property, just like a toothbrush.

This isn't the reason for our strange behaviour about new and second hand cars is it? A new car looses several thousand pounds in value as soon as it is driven off the forecourt.

Deuteronomy 25:11-12

Yes, it would be ever so much better if she lets her husband get beaten to death. The important thing is, Don't touch the junk.

If this is one of the 613 commandments of law, how do I convince the 'good-ol-boys' down at our local courthouse to display them alongside The Ten Commandments they've proudly and defiently framed in the hall? "This is a CHRISTIAN courthouse!" and damned be it anything else, rings out. I hope I'm never arrested for a traffic violation. It could become a terribly frightening experience.

Thanks, that's a fantastic essay. Dawkins would do well to leave the Biblical crit to the Biblical scholars.

When men fight with one another, and the wife of the one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of him who is beating him, and puts out her hand and seizes him by the private parts, then you shall cut off her hand; your eye shall have no pity.

Deu 25:11-12

Good rule, if you ask me !
