But the damn ancients did have dates, calendars, etc. If the gospel writers had wanted to make the date of Jesus' birth or death precise, they could have done so, as the x th year in the reigh of Y emperor.

I don't know who was originally responsible for West's approach. He might not even have been responsible for the philological distinction between the two accounts based on brefos and paidion. But the older the tradition the more likely it will be to succeed.
