For those who might be interested Bart Ehrman is being interviewed about his book Lost Christianities today by Terry Gross of NPR on the show Fresh Air.

It was a great interview.

Some weeks ago, someone asked about his religious persuasion. His response to a similar question from the host of Fresh Air was something to the effect of "I started out as an evangelical inerrantist. In seminary I discovered other texts, conflicts, and redactors. It challenged my faith."

He didn't go into what his current religious beliefs were, though.

He also said that he "lost his faith". So, if I were a bettin' man, I'd say he's somewhere between agnostic and atheist. It sounded as if he did not consider himself a Christian (at least not in the traditional sense). If he does consider himself a Christian, it is probably in the Spong, Crossan, Borg sense - which might as well be atheism in my opinion.

The interview was good, even if I do disagree overall.

It should be on again tonight (in Dallas, anyway) around 7pm central time for those who didn't get to listen.

Thanks for the link, Haran.

Ehrman also said that his classmates, whose faith was not based on inerrancy, did not have a crisis of faith when they read the New Testament.

Just listened to it online. Good interview. Has anyone read any of his books?

I have read Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet of the New Millennium which was excellent. It takes the point of view that the real Jesus was an apocalyptic preacher on the order of David Koresh. It is hard to imagine a True Christian (tm) taking that view of the HJ.

I have also read most of The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture, which is an indispensable reference.

What's wrong with panentheism? That is saying supernatural theism is no different than the absentee landlord of deism. Does it fare much better?
