Damn those Midianites!
So I was looking through my old school notes and papers and ran across a short paper I wrote raising the issue of the Midianites in Numbers. Moses has to flee Egypt after slaying an Egyptian that was about to give a Hebrew a ticket for jaywalking... or something like that.
So Moses is fleeing and comes under the wing of Jethro Tull, a rock band out of the Midianite troop. So, Moses pretty much forgets about ever going back to his people (did he even know what "his people" were?) and settles with Tull and Midianites. Then one day, Moses does some weed that was laying around and starts talking to a burning bush. I know, I know, marijuana isn't hallucinogenic, but that isn't important right now. What is important is that Moses, for all intents and purposes became a Midianite. He finds god on the Midianites turf, making one ponder maybe this deity originates with the Midianites. So in any case, he goes off to Egypt, frees his people after some arduous, needless, Terrell Owens like showboating by God and they head to the promised land. Then, after the Hebrews had seen all their god could do... parting a fucking sea and all, they start screwing other tribes and worshiping other gods. Then at one point an Israelite is seen with a Midianite woman. Aaron does what any normal person would do with an inter-tribal couple and speared them together (which pleased god enormously... yeah I know... people just bitch about such killing in the Qur'an). Afterwards, god tells Moses, "Kill the Midians." Moses... thinks nothing of it. It feels as if there are two Moses in the Old Testament. |

Midianite Slaves in Egypt?
Hi Jimmy Higgins,
Yes, this is interesting. It is also interesting that the Midianites took Joseph to Egypt Quote:
Quote:
If we see the beginning of Moses adoption as a later add on, then the story becomes one of an Egyptian prince getting adopted by a Midianite tribe. Could the original story have been how Moses freed Midianite slaves from the Egyptians? Warmly, Philosopher Jay (AKA Jay Raskin) Quote:
