I don't know what you mean by "Gnostic forgery." The so-called gnostics were a variant of early Christianity who lost out in the struggle with what became orthodox Christianity. But their gospels cannot be regarded as forged.

If this is a genuine scrap from a 4th century manuscript, it is not really astounding or incredible. We know that there was an early Christian sect, the Valentinians, who thought that Jesus was married, and there are other indications that some early Christians thought that Mary Magdalene was a disciple.

I would rather say, that was the 'catho-Christianity' to have been a variant of Gnosticism (of course the one 'jesuan'), and this is because the REAL 'church' founded by Jesus was the one gnostic, while with that Catholic he did not had absolutely nothing to do. In practice, the 'catho-christianity' is the largest HERESY that men have ever known! ...

There are a myriad of indications, in patristic literature, in that Gnostic and even in the New Testament, which we suggest a Gnostic Jesus and NOT one catholic! (or 'catho-christian')

According to some biblical scholars the term 'wife' can just mean female follower and assistant. Anyway a piece of papyrus created 400 years after the event is not proof of anything.

Shame they took two millennia to think it up.
