Ten Commandments - RCC version
Quote:
Definitely. Here is a major example. There are catholic versions that omit including 5:8 italicized below ("graven image") which in most versions is a separate commandment, on the rationale that it is a subset of 5:7. Deuteronomy 5:7-8 Thou shalt have none other gods before me. Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: This has some backdrop. http://riw.us/pr/Catholic/commandments.html The Commandments of God You can see how the "covet" command is expanded to keep the count at ten. Actually, there is a third version of the "Ten Commandments" which is contained in Exodus 34. It is the only version of the three which is actually called the ten commandments in the Bible.
It includes goodies like "You shall make for yourself no molten gods"; and my favourite: "You shall not boil a kid in it's mothers milk" I have no objection whatsoever with either of these, so post them in whatever court house you wish to. Norm |

Also these two verses. Deuteronomy 4:13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. Deuteronomy 10:4 And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the LORD spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD gave them unto me. And I do not think that the commandments you mention are being listed as part of the ten commandments in Exodus 34. Shalom, Steven Avery |

While I normally hesitate to cite Wikipedia as a source check out this page in particular the table of the commandments (It's under "Division of Commandments) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_com...n_Commandments While in general the major Christian groups or sects have the same commandments that fact is that there are 15 or so "statements" which are divided differently to make up "10 Commandments " obviously the general meaning is the same just the form is different |

ReligiousTolerance.org on the 10C
Positive Atheism on "Which Ten Commandments?" The Protestant version emphasizes the "graven image" prohibition, which Protestants use to bash Catholics. But most of the American politicians who promote the 10 commandments don't know or care what they say, and would react in horror if anyone tried to enforce some of them (no Sunday shopping or football? and when is the Sabbath anyway?) eta: Fun Fact: Former Judge Roy Moore had a 6 ton marble granite scupture made of the "10 commandments." But to get around the differing versions, he actually listed 11 commandments. |

There are certainly three different versions within the Torah (Bible), but as has been said, there are also many different "popular" versions. This is a common popular version: 1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 2. Thou shalt not make graven images. 3. Thou shalt not use the Lord's name in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 5. Honor thy mother and thy father. 6. Thou shalt not murder. 7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. 8. Thou shalt not steal. 9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. 10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's property. Which comes from: Quote:

As other posters have already pointed out, the abbreviated versions of The Ten Commandments that most of us are familiar with come from verses in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5. The following come from a 2004 Washington Post article found at http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp...nguage=printer
JEWISH VERSION 1. I the Lord am your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, the house of bondage. 2. You shall have no other gods besides Me. 3. You shall not swear falsely by the name of the Lord your God. 4. Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. 5. Honor your father and your mother. 6. You shall not murder. 7. You shall not commit adultery. 8. You shall not steal. 9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house: you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or . . . anything that is your neighbor's. CATHOLIC-LUTHERAN VERSION: 1. I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me. 2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 3. Remember to keep holy the Lord's Day. 4. Honor your father and your mother. 5. You shall not kill. 6. You shall not commit adultery. 7. You shall not steal. 8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor's goods. PROTESTANT VERSION 1. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me. 2. You shall not make yourself a graven image. 3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work. 5. Honor your father and your mother. 6. You shall not kill. 7. You shall not commit adultery. 8. You shall not steal. 9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or . . . anything that is your neighbor's. |

The list of 10 commandments found in Exodus 34:11-26 is referred to as a Ritual Decalogue or 10 commandments of ritual worship. http://faculty.pepperdine.edu/cheard..._Law_Codes.pdf That list of commandments is followed by these verses: Exodus 34:27,28 "Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel." Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments." The things I can learn by researching a topic! |
