It may have been told by eyewitnesses to other people, but the people who actually wrote the gospels were not eyewitnesses.

Just because most people believe what they read in the news doesn't mean the news is reliable. Any time I've been involved with or privy to details of an event that is reported in the newspaper, I've always been amazed at how wrong they can be.

Should we take this to mean that you are admitting the error of your claim that they "were well known, and well respected historians"? As even Wiki agrees with the major theologians, who have provided you with every modern Bible translation (as I already quoted from the introduction to a couple NAB Gospels):

New_Testament

Quote:
Each of the gospels narrates the life and death of Jesus of Nazareth. The traditional author is listed after each entry; modern scholarship generally regards these as anonymous.
ยท The Gospel of Matthew, traditionally ascribed to the Apostle Matthew, son of Alphaeus according to Papias
Or are you placing tradition above Christian scholarship? It's hard to tell with your semi- non-answer...

From your source:

"The traditional author is listed after each entry; modern scholarship generally regards these as anonymous." (emphasis added)
