Chariot Wheels Again
I have a couple of born-again fundies in one of my online World Lit classes. We just finished discussing excerpts from Genesis, and someone mentioned that he had heard that there were Christians who didn't accept a literal interpretation of the Bible. Other students were incredulous; they had never heard of such a thing. I gave them a little riff about contradictions in the Bible, some history of the Arian heresy and Gnosticism in the early church, a bit about 19th-20th century Higher Criticism and Modernism, a little about the schism between liberal and fundamentalist Christianity, and pointed out that American evangelicals are only a small percentage of Christians worldwide . . . and all hell broke loose. Persecution complexes seemed to sprout from cyberspace. One said that he didn't belittle people who read the Bible symbolically, so he didn't think anyone should belittle him for reading it literally. I said I wasn't belittling anyone, merely stating known facts. Another said that if God could part the Red Sea--"which he did!"--he would be able to get as many people across as he wanted.
Anyway, one student said she had "recently" seen a discovery channel "documentary" about hundreds of chariot wheels found in the Red Sea. So, my question is: WTF??? Someone point me to this claim? Craig |

Even the Christian creationist Answers in Genesis organization says it's a hoax. Scroll down to "Pharaoh’s chariots?"

You can't counter "goddidit". Its not worth the effort to try. It would be more lucrative to beat a dead flying sow in the mouth with a silk purse.

might not be able to counter that. but when the theophiles give you what they call evidence. then one has the obligation to investigate and if possible debunk their claims.
