I have a feeling that religions tend to recycle the same themes, sometimes retroactively. Krishna was compared by the Greeks to Heracles. For instance it is claimed that the 10th Vishnu Avatar Kalki, was a takeoff on the horsemen of Revelations.

Exactly. Some themes are universal, and not merely "borrowed". Would anyone claim that the Greeks borrowed the Tao from the Buddhists who borrowed it from the Chinese etc... in the form of logos? Similar pyramids have been found in both Mesopotamia and Mesoamerica - did one influence the other? Humans are remarkably similar in thinking.
