If you go to the library and look in the commentarys on the NT you will find that some are honest enough to say that the story of ""The Rich Man and Lazarus" Luke 16 predates Christianity and was a story circulated by the Jews in Egypt before Jesus was born.

Thanks, Stuart, too. This is more along the lines I meant; but, as well as stolen parables, there are, I think, some word-for-word instances of sayings that can be traced to recorded statements of slightly earlier Jewish teachers: turn the other cheek, love thy neighbour, etc. Must do some more digging and report back. Much appreciate everyone's help and for pointing me in some interesting directions. Very best. Neil |
