Dating the Gospels: An Overview of the Arguments?
Can anyone recommend a book that lists the arguments put forward by the various stances on the dating of the Gospels?
Perhaps there is a book on each stance that you can recommend? |

Who Wrote the New Testament (or via: amazon.co.uk) by Burton Mack is good for the scholarly opinion.

One of the "Introduction to the New Testament" type textbooks should give these arguments, and for the rest of the books of the NT as well. There is one by the late Father Raymond E. Brown (or via: amazon.co.uk), and by Helmut Koester (or via: amazon.co.uk) (this is 2 volumes, but vol 2 is the one dealing with dating). However, I do not have either on my bookshelf to see exactly how thoroughly they treat the dating issue. Brown was Catholic but rather thorough and not a slave to church tradition. Koester is more liberal, and does not really deal with conservative dating, but is also thorough.
Koester also wrote a book, Early Christian Gospels (or via: amazon.co.uk), that may also provice some info and comparison to the other heterodox and heretical gospels that were floating around. For a more conservative take, InterVarsity Press (IVP) publishes a Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels (or via: amazon.co.uk), which should have articles that deal with dating of the four canonical gospels. If it is anything like their Dictionary of Paul and His Letters (or via: amazon.co.uk), which I do have, be sure the non-conservative dating schemes will get very brief and kind of shallow coverage (more like "honourable mention" without much detail, that is, damned by faint praise).
