Pete's favorite Vivekananda quote split from Philo, Josephus et al.
Quote:
You need to address the archaeology for the therapeutae of Asclepius. Here is a sample index. The personal physical to the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Galen, calls himself a therapeutae of Asclepius. The Asclepian temple network in antiquity represented the public hospital system. These people were not christians. While travelling from England to India in January 1897, on board the ship Prinz-Regent Luitpold, the venerable sage Vivekananda told Nivedita about his dream of an old bearded man named Therapeutae, (Theraputra - son [putra] of an old monk [thera]) who had asked: "Do ye come to effect our restoration? I am one of the ancient order of Therapeutae The truths preached by us have been given out by Christians as taught by Jesus; but for the matter of that, there was no personality by the name of Jesus ever born".- Extracted from Vivekananda's autobiography. Cited by Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy; and Narasingha Prosad Sil |

Pete - how long are you going to keep recycling that quote? You are stuck like a needle on a broken record.
You cited this in an archived thread from 2008: "Eusebian Hypothesis" -- unsubstantiated claims. In post 54 I gave you the full context of the original, which included the statement that Vivekananda "never refused to accept the historical Christ." But you have yet to acknowledge that, or explain why a dream of an Indian yogi has any relevance to anything here. |

I enjoy citing the Vivekananda dream of the Therapeutae to all those people who dream about the relationship of the early christians and the therapeutae.
My response all those years ago was as follows: Quote:
Toto, The point is that you need to address the archaeology for the therapeutae of Asclepius. See the linked index above. The personal physician to the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Galen, calls himself a therapeutae of Asclepius. The Asclepian temple network in antiquity represented the public hospital system. These people were not christians. We have truckloads of evidence for non christian theraputae. Why are we still dreaming about the therapeutae as missing links to early christianity? |
