Default Getting rebuked!

επετιμησεν / epitimao / Strong's 2008 / Rebuke

Used 30 times in the NT.

Mt 19:13 Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them.
Mt 20:31 And the multitude sternly told them to be quiet; but they cried out all the more, saying, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"

Mr 8:33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."
Mr 9:25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again."
Mr 10:13 And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them.
Mr 10:48 And many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
Lu 4:35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him without doing him any harm.
Lu 4:39 And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately arose and waited on them.
Lu 4:41 And demons also were coming out of many, crying out and saying, "You are the Son of God!" And rebuking them, He would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.
Lu 8:24 And they came to Him and woke Him up, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And being aroused, He rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm.
Lu 9:21 But He warned them, and instructed them not to tell this to anyone,
Lu 9:42 And while he was still approaching, the demon dashed him to the ground, and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

Jude 1:9 But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, "The Lord rebuke you."

υπακουουσιν / hupakouo / 5219 / "obey" is similar.

On a few different objects:
- mostly humans
- a few demons/evil spirits
- a fever or two
- weather-related inanimate objects such as wind air particles and waves/water

Rebuking a non-sapient object seems futile.

Did the authors actually think the wind and the waves had sapience and could obey or disobey?

I suspect they did. It was part of the times. Besides, the pagan gods were always controlling the elements, so Christians could do no less. If they thought about it, they might reformulate things so that calling on god controlled the waves, and they were calling on god, not the spirits in the waves.

Have you read Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World (or via: amazon.co.uk) recently? Our ancestors lived in a demon-haunted world, and some people still do.

I was just interested in the pantheistic or polytheistic implications.

Haven't read that Sagan book (yet) but I've always found this story from Mt 14 most interest...

Quote:
22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but the boat was already a considerable distance[a] from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.

27But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

28"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."

29"Come," he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"

31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

32And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

34When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
I find that presupposition as well as quick-fire transition amazing.
