Well of course Peter has the right answer but that sure means they were scared of premarital sex in those days!
Remember here that Mary becomes the bride of the Lamb and I wonder how that would work according to Peter. |

They were Not married... Jewish wedding ceremonies required that a marriage be "consumated" - sexual intercourse. The references below explain that Joseph had yet not taken her for his wife. He did not consumate the marriage until Jesus was born.
From Matthew Chapter 1, New Living Translation: 18) Now this is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19) Joseph, her fiance, being a just man, decided to break the engagement quietly, so as not to disgrace her publicly. 20)"Joseph, son of David," the angel said, "do not be afraid to go ahead with your marriage to Mary. 24) When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord commanded. He brought Mary home to be his wife, but she remained a virgin until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. From the King James Version: Mt 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. |
