It's not biblical criticism or history.

Is the forum topic too arcane for you to grasp? If not, why post this here?

Well, first of all, he would deny Christianity since he was a Jew. Past that he means what he says, he added the cosmological constant since that's what made the equations work (the universe was thought to be static), later on it changed (the universe was found to be expanding), so it was his "biggest mistake." Whoopdie doo, the guy who wrote the article is incredibly dense, what else is new?

No, no guys -- you got it all wrong. It's Einstein here! The fact is that Einstein was the smartest physicist of the early 20th century, therefore making him the best authority on religious philosophy. That he thought Christianity was bullshit has no bearing on the fact we should convert to said religion because he was pantheistic jew.

...or at least I gather that's how the argument goes?

. . . . according to Christianity, the purpose of the universe is not to be morally or physically perfect, but to provide a place where spiritual creatures can choose to love or reject God - to live with Him forever in a new, perfect universe, or reject Him and live apart from Him for eternity. It would not be possible to make this choice in a universe in which all moral choices are restricted to only good choices. Einstein didn't seem to understand that one could not choose between good and bad if bad did not exist. It's amazing that such a brilliant man could not understand such a simple logical principle.
The hubris of this is amazing.

Well, to be fair, I bet Einstein thought a lot of theologians who didn't understand relativity were idiots.

I doubt Einstein was in the habit of dismissing people who couldn't understand relativity as idiots. All I've read suggests he was a generous and tolerant (and imperfect) person.
