Default The World: Going to hell in a handbasket...

But is it only the last few generations that have been causing this?

Quote:
"The Earth is degenerating these days. Bribery and corruption abound. Children no longer mind their parents, every man wants to write a book, and it is evident that the end of the world is fast approaching." — Assyrian Stone Tablet, c.2800 BC
We ARE living in the good old days...

It's also tremendous evidence that crotchety old farts have been around for a very long time.

Probably written shortly before the Flood...

I am curious as to whether that's truly a translation off an ancient stone tablet or merely apocryphal, so I did a little web search. The only site I found (this site) that sources the quote at all says it was "reported in The Sciences, July/August 1994".

Then I found the quote on bartleby. From there, "Both of the above quotations would seem to be spurious." I think that's probably correct.

So it's funny, but probably not true.

I have no idea where this should go, but certainly not here.

If there's one thing common among nearly all people, it's the need to bitch and complain. No matter what shape the world takes on, no matter how good things are we will never, ever see an era in which the majority of people claim that the world is going to heaven in a handbasket, that things sure are better now than they were in the bad ol' days, etc...

We're all pretty much guilty of that.

It's interesting to see how the definitions of sin and corruption have changed in some ways over the millenia.

I'm reminded of the song "Kids" from the musical Bye, Bye Birdie which first opened in 1960 which includes these lyrics:
Quote:
Kids! I don't know what's wrong with these kids today! Kids! Who can understand anything they say?
So the "Kids" to which the song refers would probably be grandparents now.
