Did conquest of Canaan ever happened?
Hello!
Recently I have asked some theist how they reconcile that bloodthirsty, vengeful Yahweh with Jesus, since Jesus is supposed to be Yahweh. Well, no one attempted to answer the question but I noticed that the "defense" was that Yahweh was not cruel at all. Furthermore, the people that Hebrews, led by Yahweh, slaughtered deserved such faith since they were wicked beyond "repair." Is there any evidence for this wickedness among conquered people? Is there any evidence that conquest of Canaan ever happened? |

Sorry . . . always wanted to do that. . . .
Checketh thou the Recommended Reading List. This has two very good and accessible books that discuss the subject. Bible Unearthed is a bit "popular" and the authors go a bit far speculating the existence of a David and Solomon, however, otherwise it is excellent. Shorter, better, is Biblical Archaeology. --J.D. |

Bible Unearthed opines that there was no conquest. However, nations established their legitimacy in those bad old days by conquering, raping, and pillaging an area, so the authors of the Bible had to include a story about their nation forcibly conquering Israel under the divine guidance of their G-d. But it never happened and the Israelites were really Canaanites.

Thanks guys. I just read third chapter ("The Conquest of Canaan") from "The Bible Unearthed" and the picture is much clearer.

Dever's new book is, in my opinion, also worth a look. |
