Of what tangible benefit are opinion columns and letters to the editor to 21st century newspaper readers?

The prophets analyzed the events of their times and looked for patterns, in light of their own ideologies. I would bet that in addition to those prophets whose words were passed on in some form (whether recorded at the time or reconstructed from memory with some tweaking) there were many other analysts who were forgotten, whether intentionally or not.
