I think it would need to be shown that "before your very eyes" was a common idiom that referred to oral arguments before this would be reasonable proposition.

You are reading too much into the "portrayal". For Paul - unlike the Jerusalem missions - the "cross" was evidently the point of departure (see 1 Cr 2:2), the strongest reminder that the messianic kingdom was not coming to earth.

It's possible of course that I'm reading too much into it. I don't Greek afterall, and perhaps in Greek, "before your very eyes Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified" means something like "You all know Christ was crucified".
