Jesus And The NRA? Luke 22
The following is from Luke 22, after the Last Supper, and before the betrayal/arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane:
35Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. 36He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. I saw on another site this verse cited in a discussion about gun control, 2nd Amendment, etc. The gist of it was "Jesus told his disciples to bear arms". Is there any plausible nexus here, or is the person who is making this argument all wet? Thank you. |

The "sayings" of Jesus were drawn from various ancient sources and attributed to him.
It is quite possible that Jesus never really said anything like that, if he ever said anything at all. People have been plucking "sayings" from the Bible for thousands of years to provide their needed "proof" for whatever hot-button issue it is that they want to justify. As just about anything can be proven in this way, it usually really proves nothing at all. This is one of those "sayings" that was likely "borrowed" from someone with a much more actively militant bent, that is "out of character" with what is indicated by the overall image portrayed in other Jesus' "sayings". But it is in the narrative, so anyone can make out of it whatever they please, or whatever they can get away with. After all, they got "proof" from The Bible, and how can you argue with that? |
