Ben Perry and his "Life of Secundus the Philosopher"
I was wondering whether anyone could inform me concerning the actual physical paper (or papyrus) based copies, or information about the sources used by Ben Perry in translating this work of literature, presumably from Greek to English.
A copy of the english translation is here: http://www.mountainman.com.au/essene...hilosopher.htm I am interested if this Secundus has been referenced by any other writers of antiquity and mentioned elsewhere, for example, by Hadrian. I am also interested in anything the translator Ben Perry may have said or commented about this particular work, whether an introduction exists by other translators (to English). All these accounts appear to be historically unreliable. In an attempt to discover a historical Secundus as the basis for the legends he has been identified with the Secundus given a brief biography in Philostratus' Lives of the Sophists who was active at the same place (Athens) and time (Hadrian's reign) as the Secundus of the legends. Do you happen to know whether 1) an english translation of Philostratus' Lives of the Sophists is available online anywhere (I have checked without success), and if not 2), what recommended out of copyright translations exist to be sourced? Many thanks for the information. Pete Brown http://www.mountainman.com.au/namaste_2006.htm NAMASTE: "The spirit in me honors the spirit in you" |
