The Revolt against Anno II.
When I registered, I mentioned in my introduction, that the citizens of my hometown, Cologne, took up arms twice against their reigning archbishop.
Asked about it, I promised to elaborate on this on some future occasion. Here is part one, the story about the revolt against archbishop Anno II. in 1074: DISCLAIMER: While I am an enthusiastic amateur regarding the history of Cologne, I am not a history scholar in any sense of the word. Thus, the following account may be a little oversimplified, but, as far as I know, mostly accurate. In 1074 Anno II. the archbishop of Cologne, being both the religious and secular authority, was visited by the bishop of Münster for the celebration of Easter. To aid the visiting bishop on his journey home, the archbishop proceeded to confiscate the ship - already equipped and loaded for a trade voyage - of a well respected merchant. This was the proverbial last straw for the relationship between the city and it's ruler, already strained by his repeated infringement on the autonomy of the civic nobility. Inflamed by this incident an angry mob assembled and laid siege to the cathedral, which was eventually taken, but the archbishop had already fled to Neuss. There he assembled an army of mercenaries and returned the favor of laying siege. After he retook the city, he had the leaders of the revolt flogged and blinded. Anno II. died the following year, but his successors acted with a little more discretion, so that soon an agreement along the lines of "we accept your authority as long as you don't exercise it" was reached. That is, until, in 1288, another archbishop tried to revert to the good old days, and the matter was settled permanently. But that is another story, for another day... |

This has nothing to do with biblical history, but ist is history nonetheless, so I didn't know where to post it.
One could also argue for Church/State Separation, but that also didn't seem right. In short: Administrators, feel free to move it as you see fit. |

This is the appropriate forum for the history of Christianity, which does include a bit of warfare and gratuitous cruelty.
