Evidence that Jews did not think Messiahs could be crucified
One of the assured results of mainstream Biblical scholarship is that Jews did not believe the Messiah would be crucified.
If somebody had been crucified, he was regarded as a criminal, not a Messiah. I am trying to collect evidence for this assertion of mainstream Biblical scholarship, to test whether or not it really was true. So far, I have come across this passage. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Is this evidence that Jews would automatically count crucified people as criminals, who had brought God's wrath upon themselves? |

What the Jews actually thought was irrelevant to what the Romans thought that the Jews thought.

Do you have similar passages ,which could act as evidence that Jews automatically thought of people killed by the Romans as having brought the punishment on themselves by rebelling against agents of God? |
