Jesus Tomb: James Tabor Blog
I took this from James Tabor's blog:
here and here (main page). Methinks Thou Protestest Too Much James Tabor The aspect of the Talpiot tomb controversy raised by the Cameron/Jacobovici film that troubles me most is the sense I get, out on the Web and in the press, of an almost desperate need to debunk. I would surely expect this from the evangelical Christian side of things. As Daryl Bock made clear in the Koppel interview, for Christian faith as he understands it, it simply could not be the case that this tomb is related to Jesus of Nazareth and his family. So, there is no choice but to refute with great aplomb... ********* I thought some of the things he says here are relevant to some of the discussion I've seen on this board. He's written more posts you can read at his site that are good reads as well this one. For my own part, I watched the show and now I'm curious. Yes, I think some conclusions were stretched. But certainly that doesn't mean we throw the whole thing out. I have not reached any conclusions. But I want to see more. I want to see scholars weigh in after much further study, not weigh in with knee-jerk reactions. I hope there are others on this board that want the same. I am curious to other board member's natural reactions (as opposed to the quick christian attacks). Do you think there is enough there to warrant further study, or do you there's enough problems to set it aside? Cygnus |

It definitely deserves more attention. There are some questions that haven't yet been answered, but there are no obvious misrepresentations or misunderstandings.
Frankly, I'm skeptical. Take any Jewish family of that period at random. What are your chances of finding their tomb? I wouldn't think it would be very good. But that is hardly a very scientific criticism. The statistical study is somewhat misleading. But other than that, I haven't encountered and strong criticism, much less refutation. There is another thread on this board where this is being discussed more extensively. I suggest you check it out. |

As soon as the faithful get right with the FACT that the Earth is not FLAT, then there won't be this prescious assertion that Jesus physical body came up out of a hole and kept going "up" in some straight line to a "heaven". The world is round and not a flat plane sandwiched between heaven and hell. Get over it already.
