Thesis paper: Trade Guilds of the Latter Roman Empire (Utley, 1925)
The Social and Economic Conditions
of the members of the "Collegia' from Constantine to Theodosius II (c.314 - 450 CE) Thesis in Economics, 1925 - Freda Utley (1899-1978) An interesting bit of research. Particularly CHAPTER II - The Chrysargyron (Poll Tax). I understand many here are perhaps only interested in the history of the first and/or first and second centuries --- on the basis that it was here that all the interesting and creative christian literature was actually authored. Dont forget that we must also understand, not only the author, but also the history of the textual transmission from that author to us in the 21st century, and this is why we must know the fourth century as well. Finally, the article was "redacted" from its source on the web because it contains many references in passing to the law codes of the Theodosian Codex, which is not available on the net in English. Best wishes, Pete Brown *********** |
