I think that it is usually assumed that the verse referres to meteors.

The sun and moon will be darkened, and stars,[meteors] will fall from the sky

I suspect that you will get little more than the old line about allegorical stories in an otherwise true setting. I don't think Fundy's really believe that the stars will fall to the earth, nor do they really believe that there was a prodigal son. What's important to Christians is that Jesus tells us a story about how he loves us, just like the pets that we are to him. Jesus was just talking to the audience in a way that they would understand.

Of couse the problem is figuring out what is truly supposed to be allegorical and what is supposed to be literal, and on this point, fundies disagree and fight constantly - as well as among more liberal xtians.

And of course in ancient times, the idea of the stars falling would have been taken quite literally, as after all they were merely small lights far in the sky beyond Jupiter.

Don't fight it. If god wants stars to fall from heaven, they'll fall from heaven. Haven't you heard of an all-powerful god? Haven't you heard of miracles?

Shame, shame, shame!

well, if they were just falling from the sky, i'd have no problem with it..............the odd thing is that they are falling to the earth, yet people are still running around looking for places to hide. i'm no astronomer, but i have a problem with this one...
