The Passion of Jesus, the BBC and the Resurrection
Some people have written saying they were 'delighted with the last episode and the presentation of the resurrection, probably the best thing about the whole film and possibly the best presentation of the resurrection I've seen. '
Was it better than Paul's presentation of the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15? Paul was writing to converts to Jesus-worship who scoffed at the whole idea of God choosing to raise a corpse. Sadly, Paul could not show them the BBC film. Or use any of the details from the film. No wonder he was reduced to telling people 'For we know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands' If only Paul had seen the BBC film, or learned about any of its details, then he would have been far more able to teach what a resurrected body was like to Christian convertes who scoffed at the idea of a corpse turning into a resurrected body. |

Hi Steven - give us a clue what this is about?
There seems to be a BBC program called The Passion. Does this compare to Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ in terms of graphic violence? Do I dare click on that video? |

The BBC does not go in for the gore fest of Mel Gibson. And people speak in proper English, not this God-forsaken Aramaic. |

I thought it an interesting portrayal. Jesus came off to my eyes as a more crowd savvy guy, with his explicit purchase of a donkey (just one though!) to ride into Jerusalem on, and his use of his disciples to go ahead and generate some publicity for his impending arrival.
It made it very clear he wasn't fulfilling prophecy by accident, but by careful design. The politics between Pilate and Caiaphas, and the Sanhedrin as a sort of secret police force come ninja group was new to me (tell me why the Life of Brian "Crack Suicide squad" kept coming to mind though!). No mention of Herod's part though. I was wondering if Judas would hang himself from a tree, or fall into the field - in the event he hung himself in a deep well, neatly sidestepping the issue! The post resurrection part was also quite interestingly done. The resurrected Jesus appearing as a different man initially. I thought it a watchable description of the events, with its own interpretation. Although given the material, probably something to offend everyone if they look! |
