I need one of the worst bible phrases that Xians would still put a good spin on. Any suggestions?

How about the "kill your obnoxious kid" passage?
Quote:
Deuteronomy 21:18-21 (New International Version)
18 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard." 21 Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

An then of course we have the perennial favorite "kill your immediate family if they fall of the faith":
Quote:
Deuteronomy 13:6-11 (New International Version)
6 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, 7 gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), 8 do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. 9 You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. 10 Stone him to death, because he tried to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 11 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again.

Gstafleu, are these really scriptures you've heard Christians put a "good spin" on? I never have, and I know thousands of Christians.

I am posing as a Xian on a forum and need it not to be too obvious. Though simply posting this here could blow my cover...

The problem with these quotes is that many Christians, and pretty well most fundamentalists do not take much notice of the OT any more, and virtually disregard it from the "faith" point of view.

Phrases like "times were different then", "we don't know what is in God's mind, therefore we should not question it", and of course, the BIGGIE, that "God has given us a New Covenent" to replace the old.

This leaves a lot of wriggle room to have a get out of jail free card for pretty much everything the OT says, except for one wierd exception, the Ten Commandments.

And even then they don't accept them, or the Biblical requirement for killing people who break them. There's that pesky old "New Covenent" again.

Mention that the amount of blood which is said will fill the valley of Megiddo in the Book of Revelation is more human blood than exists.

That's pretty interesting. If it's true it still wouldn't qualify as a "spin" topic for Christians. Besides, very few Christians are would ever claim Revelation to be a literal read. Apocalyptic literature is by nature of its genre symbolic. In the same way that poetry can be full of wisdom and truth, it is not inherently "literal." Therefore anything from the book of Revelation is not a good choice for stumping a Christian. Most of us are perfectly fine with being stumped by the book (at least most should be).

Nuwanda - though you even may be in the majority, realize that there are Christians who believe the Apocalypse to be 100% literally true. It's chilling.

Topics like slavery always bring on a lot of spin, even the one that says you can beat a slave to within an inch of his life as long as he only dies within a couple of days from his injuries and not right away.

Another good one is how the punishment for a rapist is being forced to marry his victim or the one about how if a man suspects his wife of cheating he can force her to drink a poison concoction - if she dies she was guilty, if she lives she was innocent.

Let the Spin begin!

PS. I could find the references for you but I'm feeling kind of lazy. Let me know if you need directions.
