I've noticed you couldn't come to a conclusion. I would think out of all people on the earth, the POPE would certainly follow the laws of Jesus, and that would be to despise our own parents.

Given the history of the papacy, and the character of some of the men who have held that position, I don't think this is a reasonable assumption. While most people would like to believe the pope is a great example of a good christian, reality doesn't always support that idea.

It doesn't seem to me that the popes have ever followed Christ to the letter. I mean, that's impossible for just about anyone. The point of hating one's parents is to free oneself from the coils of fleshly existence in order to serve the Spirit fully and completely. While no one can really do this (practicality is not Christ's concern), it is nevertheless a useful passage to bring to mind when one is seeking, for whatever reason, to escape parental control.

I don't need to. The text is specific: it clearly uses the word "hate". But sadly you have come to a conclusion and that involves twisting the text to reflect your opinions. In your warped way you need to think of hell waiting for you.

Roll your eyes as much as you want: it won't hide the egg.

Yes, I have to agree with you on this one. Even the church considered some Popes to be the AntiChrist.

But back to the original issue.

Jesus said, Have you not heard the laws of Moses? You are to Honor and obey your Mother and Father.

Why would Jesus turn around and then say "hate your parents!"?

Not to sound rude or ignorant, but some of you are making Jesus out to be a rebellious child.

It does appear that to some, ANY interpretation but their own is "twisting".

Which means of course, they are infallible. Careful!

From my research, I found out that Jesus is love, and I highly disbelieve he was going around Jerusalem preaching to HATE your parents or you're going to Hell!

Jesus said, have you not heard the laws of Moses? You are to honor thy mother and father.

The Old Testament says, Anyone who disrespects his parents shall be put to death.

Jesus said, Do not think I have come to abolish the laws of old, but I have come to fulfill them.

I'm sure Jesus was pretty smart when it came to the O.T Texts.

By him saying hate your parents, that totally discards everything the O.T spoke about.

You guys need to start thinking for yourself, instead of getting your information from skepticsannotatedbible.com

Yes, this is the original question. Since the word that is used is HATE, no matter what your personal interpretation is, why would the writers of the bible attribute this statement to Jesus? This could be a contradiction in message (common in the bible) or it could be that you honor your parents until you reach adulthood and choose to follow jesus, in which case you have to discard everything of your "old" life and commit fully to the endeavor. I don't know the answer, but I am also not claiming in any way that the bible is true or reliable. Sounds like different authors had different agendas, if you ask me.

Obviously, this passage bothers you, IBIH, or you wouldn't to go such ends to make the passage say something that is better suited to your sensibilities. Let's say hypothetically that you finally accept the scholarship on the word misew = hate -- how then would you explain the inherent contradiction between "honor your father/mother" and "hate your parents, etc" in the bible?

In the first case (Mt 19:19), he is responding to a question about how to act like a good person. In the second case (Lk 14:26), he is telling people how to be disciples, how to serve the Good. It is the difference between talking to an outsider and to the insiders.

The great man embodies paradoxes that seem irreconciliable at first glance.

Well, for starters, it's not my own interpretation. This comes from pretty much every bible scholar I have met. Online and in person.

But why would the Old Testament say to kill anyone who disobeys their parents, but Jesus comes along and says hate your parents? Jesus' father destroyed those who disrespected their parents, I highly doubt that was on Jesus' agenda. To go around telling everyone to hate their parents. Jesus knows his father condemned disobeying your parents, so it just baffles me at why modern english speaking people would assume Jesus was saying hate your parents.

I'm only listening to people that are preachers, preists, pastors. Are they wrong, or are they just flat-out lying?

Yes, I fully understand the word Miseo means hate or to detest, but I've emailed a few Jewish Scholars, and they have reason to believe Jesus used the word Sin'ah in that verse, which means to love God over your parents.

That was the message Jesus was sending, and I think in that time period, everyone understood him perfectly clear. Are there verses that relate to his disciples hating their parents? If not, then this is a deadend road for this argument.
