Seriously, Saeed al Yousuf, why couldn't Allah have given Mohamed the instructions for making a vaccine against AIDS? I would be interested in a respectful and serious discussion on this point. Please try to understand where I am coming from:
If God (or Allah if we are speaking Arabic, but by whichever name) knows everything, that would include instructions for stopping the AIDS virus more efficiently and with fewer side effects than either sexual abstinence or anti-retrovirals. Furthermore, if he had included such instructions in the Qu'ran, there would, at this point, be almost no non-Muslims left. Well, of course, nearly everyone would bow before a proof of God's power such as that. So why not do it? And it would have saved any number of innocent people, including, for instance, children who are infected with AIDS during the birth process because their mothers have the disease. People who have had no chance to decide whether to do right or do wrong, who have never been exposed to Islam and had no chance to choose whether to accept or reject it. In philosophy this is known as the problem of evil: Bad things happen in the world. This seems to mean God is either unwilling to stop them or incapable of stopping them. But either of those seems to go against the idea of God that religious people hold. |

News flash: Islam doesn't prevent AIDS, it simply prevents AIDS cases from being reported.
UNAIDS puts the number of PWA's in the Middle East at somewhere between 250,000 and 1.5 million. Percentage-wise, the high end of that range is only a bit below the United States and much higher than Western Europe. In some muslim countries, such as Sudan, the rates are significantly higher, and there are growing epidemics in Libya and Iran. If you want to talk about religion protecting people from AIDS, by any measure, the Asian religions have Islam beat cold. Does that prove that Confucianism is the one true way? http://www.unaids.org/ |

One of the major reasons for AIDS spreading currently in Muslim countries is injected drug use. Does the Koran say anything explicitly about injected drugs causing spreading of disease?
